Special emphasis will be placed on how you and your dog work as a team. As you practise, move the hand a little further away when you present it, so your dog learns they need to touch the hand for their marker word and a treat. The judge will order a Left Turn, Right Turn, About Turn and Halt, slow, normal and fast. Hold your hand out, side on, close to your dog’s face, as they sniff it or touch it with their nose, say ‘good’ and give them a treat. The exercise begins with heeling off leash. This gives the dog an added cue when doing these at a distance since the only "moving forward" command is done with a different arm.Īnd my finish command (return to heel position) is a simple swipe of the hand toward the side I want them to move around (they learn both a left and right finish). The signal exercise is done entirely from hand signals. My come signal is done with the left arm. My sit and down signals are pretty much what you describe, both done with the right arm. My dogs are taught to stand without moving their front feet forward - they kick the back legs out to stand instead of moving forward. I use my RIGHT hand, across my body and in front of the dog's nose. Stand Hand Signal: To teach your dog to stand, use a flat hand signal and hold it out in front of your dog’s nose. My stand signal is also usually with the dog in heel position and usually starting from a sit (although they can do it from a down, too). Here are some common hand signals for basic obedience commands: Sit. My stay signal is usually with the dog in heel position and it's done with my left hand dropped down before the dog's eyes and then away. When you use hand movements along with your voice commands, eventually, your dog will connect the hand signal with the spoken command, and you can drop the verbal part. For utility obedience, the stay and stand signals are close to the dog the down, sit and come signals are at a distance so that's how I tend to teach them to my dog. Using hand signals with dogs might seem a bit tricky, but don’t worry, it’s actually quite simple like speaking dog sign language.
